“God is not unjust; He will not forget your work and the love you have shown Him as you have helped His people and continue to help them.” – Hebrews 6:10
The Great Commission that Jesus gave us, His children, was to go and make disciples of all nations. When I hear those words, I am reminded that before someone can become a disciple of Jesus, he or she has to first receive Jesus. We just can’t walk up to someone and say, “Hey, come on, let’s make you into a disciple.” Unfortunately, we won’t get the best response from that.
But how do we lead people to know about Jesus? I believe we have to show Jesus living in us. How? One of the best ways is by serving others – not with pride, not serving in order to say “hey, look what I did,” but showing people that it is our love for Jesus that moves us to serve.
People who do not know Jesus will hear Jesus’s voice far more loudly through our actions than our words. So let us serve others as we are serving Jesus. God will remember every detail and intention that comes out of your heart.
With this said, there is always an opportunity to serve our community here at Skyland. Our ministry partner, Angela Campbell, has asked for volunteers for the after-school program she runs at Huntington Station Apartments less than 2 miles away from our church. Here are the details:
Volunteers are needed to tutor 4-6 children in kindergarten to 1st grade on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-5:30 pm. No prior experience is required, but volunteers should commit to serve throughout the school year. Volunteers will help children do homework, learn to read, and supervise playtime and snack time.
Skyland’s Missions team had discussed doing more with tutoring at our planning day earlier this year. This opportunity gives us a great way to plug into an existing program and take turns helping out. As you pray about this opportunity to serve, please feel free to contact me with any questions.
