“Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.” – Galatians 1:10

I remember when I was in school in Puerto Rico I was very popular. Popular for all the wrong reasons. Believe it or not, I was a class clown. Always disrupting the class, always disrespectful to my teachers, etc. Why? Because I wanted to impress my “friends.” I wanted their approval and I would try to earn it by making people laugh. I did this for a lot of years and by doing so, I was making horrible choices, just so those around me would know that I would dare to do anything without even thinking about the consequences.

Now that I’m older, I ask myself, why in the world did I waste my time pleasing people when at the end of the day, I accomplished nothing? When I got into trouble, none of my “friends” stuck around. When I was lonely, none of them would show up. Yet there I was, acting a fool.

Just like me, there are a lot of young men and women going down that same path of trying to impress people who won’t be there at the end of the day when they’re needed the most. But here is some good news! I learned that in Christ, there is no need to try so hard to be accepted. There is no need to make horrible choices to make somebody laugh, because you will always have a true friend in your corner: Jesus. There is a joy that is natural and we can still have fun and laugh like there is no tomorrow. The difference is that back then, I made people laugh by being hurtful to others. But now, I like to make people laugh to help them forget about their issues even for a couple of hours, because I know now that God has designed me this way.

Let’s focus on what God wants for us and just have fun!
