Who We Are
Founded in 1952, Skyland is a community united in Christ, empowered by His love and Holy Spirit. You can find us dancing during worship, studying God’s Word over coffee and cake, praying together, and serving our neighbors in Brookhaven, Atlanta. We are diverse and multi-generational, and we invite you to join us as we chase after Jesus and His perfect purpose for us.
Vision
A diverse, Spirit-filled family growing all in Christ.
Mission
Pursue and proclaim Christ to bring wholeness to lives and communities.
What We Believe
We are a United Methodist congregation guided by the Word of God and certain foundational beliefs, which include but are not limited to:
The Bible is the true Word of God. The Bible is the inspired, infallible Word of God. It tells us what we need to know about God and ourselves, and contains answers to every spiritual need.
There is one God, who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We believe there is only one God, who has revealed Himself to us as three in one:
- God the Father is the creator and sustainer of heaven and earth, without beginning or end, but eternal.
- God the Son came to us in the person of Jesus Christ through a miraculous virgin birth. He died for our sins, was buried and rose again. All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Rom. 3:23). Those who believe in Jesus are saved by grace and forgiven their sins when they repent (turn from their ways to Jesus). His resurrection promises us eternal life.
- God the Holy Spirit is present among us and works within us for worship, discipleship and service. The power and infilling of the Holy Spirit that was first experienced by Christ’s disciples on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2) is still available to us today, as are the gifts of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 12) and the fruit of the Holy Spirit (Gal. 5).
God is sovereign and God is love. We believe God is sovereign in all things, but He created us with free will, the ability to say “yes” and “no” to Him. We also know that God is love (1 John 4:8). He showed His love for us by sending His Son into the world, so that we might live free from sin and death. God’s love and grace are always present to save and forgive.
God created us to be in community. We believe the Church is an active and empowered agent of God, necessary for community, worship and spiritual growth. Through Holy Communion and baptism we are encouraged in our faith and life in Christ Jesus.
Salvation is just the beginning. Jesus said we must be born again to enter the kingdom of God (John 3). Just as physical birth assumes we will grow and mature, spiritual birth (being born again) assumes we will grow and mature – a process called sanctification. Sanctification occurs by the Holy Spirit within the Church.
