The Old Testament saints understood the holiness of God as though it was a sphere of holiness. Those who came in contact with that sphere put themselves in jeopardy. What about today. Can we come in contact with the holiness of God and live?

During one dark night around 2000 years ago, the apostle Peter was sleeping in chains between two Roman guards in the depths of King Herod's dungeon. Peter's friend and fellow apostle, James, had recently been executed which certainly added grief and sorrow to Peter's uncertainty and fear. This was the night before Peter was going to be executed. The situation had to be weighing on him, like the way waiting for news from the doctor or family can weigh on you in uncertain times. Can you imagine the bated anticipation? The fear of death and the excitement of suffering for Jesus, which Peter had rejoiced over in chapter 5 of the book of Acts, all boiling together into a gut wrenching set of opposing emotions. All of this had been done to him because of his allegiance to Christ Jesus. At some point that night Peter felt a jab in his side and heard a voice say, "Get up quickly," followed by the chains falling off of him. What’s So Good about Good Friday?

This week is Holy Week, and we look forward to Maundy Thursday, then to Good Friday and finally, thank God, to Resurrection Sunday. As we look toward Good Friday, we think about the suffering that Jesus endured, not only on the cross, but the ridicule of the people and the scourging of a Roman whip. The typical Roman scourging of Jesus’ day involved using not just any whip, but a cat ‘o nine tails with bone and metal fragments woven into the tails. This would have literally torn the flesh off of His naked body. Perhaps you saw The Passion of the Christ, produced by Mel Gibson and few years ago. The movie depicted a horrible beating, but still fell far short of the actual pain and damage inflicted upon Jesus. Add to that the sin and sickness of the world and Jesus was torn, marred, disgusting, and unrecognizable. On Maundy Thursday we celebrate the foot washing Jesus gave his disciples before He shared a Passover meal with them. After the Passover meal they went to the Garden of Gethsemane. Self-winding Christians

My beautiful bride shared with me an Oswald Chambers devotion where he referred to God as our mainspring. I have a “thing” for watches. I even have a degree in watchmaking, so I know watches inside and out. Chambers’s use of “mainspring” set me thinking. In the day Chambers wrote that phrase everyone easily understood the concept of winding a watch because every watch required a daily “winding” from its owner. Without such a winding the watch would stop. From this came the phrase “wound too tight.” While thinking about the concept of God, the Holy Spirit, being our “mainspring,” I began to realize that perhaps the majority of Christians are “battery-powered” or “self-winding” Christians. The “battery-powered Christian” would be that Christian who needs a new battery every couple of years. The rest of the time they can take a licking and keep on ticking (an old Timex slogan). The “Battery-powered” Christian does church and daily life without much thought of their Maker, their Owner, at least until the day their battery runs out of juice. Then it is time to panic.
