Defeating Church Killers – Part 1

When Skyland Church began a new visioning/purpose process we became aware of certain things within the church that threaten its survival. Over the next few blogs I will share some of these Church Killers. Here are the first two of several Church Killers (presented in no particular order):
Gossip: Gossip can be defined as carrying a concern to anyone other than a person who can help solve a problem. Gossip spreads strife and discontent. If at the start gossip isn’t false, it will soon become so. As gossip travels down the grapevine details are distorted and embellishments are added. What may have once been harmless becomes destructive. It spreads a negative attitude, facilitates a spirit of offence and a spirit of defense, and creates division and cliques within the church. On a more personal level it proves that the gossiper cannot be trusted. If a gossiper will gossip about someone else, they will gossip about you too. A gossiper cannot be trusted as a friend let alone as a confidant.
The axe of gossip has felled many ministries and churches. People often deal in perception more than they deal in reality. Gossip preys on perception and makes a mockery of truth. We ...
Ding Dong the Witch is Dead!

What could upstage a royal wedding? The killing of Osama Bin Laden by US Navy Seals. Dare we base our response to this news on the lyrics from a Hollywood musical, “Ding dong the witch is dead?” Is this a good thing and should we rejoice because of it? Is this a celebratory moment, and what do we celebrate?
Perhaps the closest parallel we have in scripture is the book of Esther and the Feast of Purim. The story of Esther, in brief, includes Esther’s selection to be queen, Haman’s plot against the Jews, Esther’s and Mordecai’s efforts to thwart Haman’s plot, and God’s deliverance of the Jewish people. The book of Esther ends with the decree to celebrate the Feast of Purim as a remembrance of these events. The purpose of the feast is not to celebrate Haman’s demise, but to celebrate the Jews deliverance. Is there a difference? Certainly. It is a difference of focus. Kevin Howard and Marvin Rosenthal, in their book The Feasts of the Lord, said, “Purim is far more than just the defeat of God’s enemies; it is the deliverance of God’s people” (Nelson Publishing p.189). Israeli General Consul

Yesterday, Monday, November 23, 2009, Linda and I had the opportunity to gather with about 25 others in the home of Ann Platz to meet and hear Barukh Binah, Consul General of Israel. The privilege alone is worth bragging about, but I will resist the temptation. General Consul Binah spoke for about 45 minutes and then apologized for taking so much time, even though we would have gladly listened. I found him to be a most gracious man who is deeply concerned about his country but also completely confident in his country.
Binah talked about Israel?s desire for its close friendship with the United States to continue, but emphasized that Israel is not dependant on any other country. They can and will defend themselves if necessary. Binah spoke carefully about Iran. Clearly no one in the free world wants Iran to have nuclear weapons, especially Israel. Binah said that the problem in the Middle East was not Jew verses Muslim, or Israeli verses Arab, but extremist verses moderate. Israel is willing to join together with Arab nations for peace and to stop Iran from gaining control over the Middle East as a whole. Can you imagine a Middle ...
