“Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” – Genesis 3:19b

It is hard to believe that Ash Wednesday and Lent are just around the corner. On Ash Wednesday, we are reminded of our mortality and limited understanding of all that exists. It is a time of penitence that makes us reflect on our sinfulness and recognize the goodness of God in sending his Son, Jesus Christ, into the world to save us.

During Lent we are invited to introspection, to look inside of ourselves, and to consider the sacrifice that God made when he became flesh and dwelt among us in Jesus. Many people practice fasting of food or other things to give up something for Lent. It is a way of showing how sorry we are for our sins and how much we appreciate what God has done for us.

I prefer a different approach to Lent. I consider it a time to redouble my efforts to share the good news of Jesus Christ. A time to invite more people to church, to strike up more conversations with strangers about faith, a time to hand out more of my business cards, a time to encourage people to draw closer to the God who loves them with an unconditional love. So instead of taking away during Lent I add…I add to my resolve to follow Jesus, I add to my commitment to discipleship, I add to my witnessing and prayer life…I add more Jesus, which at the end of the day is what we all need.

As you go through Lent this year I encourage you to not just give up something but to add something. Add something that brings you closer in your walk with Jesus, add something that brings others into a saving relationship with Jesus Christ, add something that makes His sacrifice on the cross for us known to more people. Imagine how much the kingdom would grow if Christians would add during Lent every year!
